Glossary

Wildcard

A Wildcard SSL Certificate helps in achieving SSL encryption on multiple sub-domains with the help of a single certificate as long as the sub domains are on one same physical server, share the same second-level domain name and are under the control of a single organization. For example, if you need to secure the following websites :

  • www.yourdomain.com
  • secure.yourdomain.com
  • product.yourdomain.com
  • info.yourdomain.com
  • download.yourdomain.com
  • anything.yourdomain.com
and all of these websites are hosted on the same server box, you can purchase and install one Wildcard certificate issued to *.yourdomain.com to secure all these sites. The number of sub domains that you can use the wildcard certificate to secure is unlimited, for example, the same certificate can be used every time you add a new sub domain to yourdomain.com. If you need to span the wildcard certificate across multiple physical servers, you may purchase additional licenses.

Warranty

All MindGenies SSL certificate services include a Warranty to provide your site extra assurance that your site is safe to conduct online business. This Warranty is payable to your site visitors who rely on your SSLGenie certificates and who incur losses resulting directly from an online credit card transaction as a result of a mis-issued SSLGenie certificate. The low assurance certificates come with a warranty of $50. The high assurance certificates give you a choice of selecting the warranty amount as per your requirement.

SGC

It stands for Server Gated Cryptography which allows up to 256-bit encryption and an automatic 128-bit encryption, even on legacy browsers which support only40-bit or 56-bit encryption. Even though an SSL Certificate is capable of 128-bit or 256-bit encryption, many millions still use older computer systems that are incapable of strong encryption. (Building Blocks of Transparent Web Security: Server-Gated Cryptography, Yankee Group, 2005.) Server Gated Cryptography is answer to this problem as it ensures a minimum of 128-bit encryption, and a 256-bit encryption (using AES, Advanced Encryption Standards) if your site visitor's browser and your server Cipher Suite support 256-bit encryption. We believe that you should use SGC certificates if you accept and transmit high-value information over the internet and/or have the slightest of the hint that your recipients are using an old browser or an operating system. These legacy browsers and operating systems fail to step up to strong encryption without an SGC-enabled SSL Certificate :

  • Certain Internet Explorer browser versions from 4.01 to 5.01
  • Certain Netscape browser versions from 4.07 to 4.72
  • Many Windows 2000 systems using Internet Explorer
Internet Explorer browser versions prior to 3.02 and Netscape browser versions prior to 4.02 are not capable of 128-bit encryption with any SSL Certificate.

Browser Ubiquity

Browser Ubiquity is the extent to which the Certification Authority's (CA) root certificate is included in the Web browsers in the market. A High browser ubiquity means that most existing browsers recognize a given certificate and thus secure transactions can take place on those browsers. SSL Certificates will only be recognized by a browser if the Root Certificate of the CA is present within the "trusted Root Certificates" store of the browser. CA Root Certificates are added into the trusted Root Certificate store by the browser or operating system vendor, such as Microsoft or Netscape. So clearly the lower the browser ubiquity, the lesser number of people will trust your website and this distrust will defeat the whole purpose of a digital certificate. So to ensure security of data and transactions, one must go in for a certificate that provides a very high browser ubiquity. Your browser ubiquity is a key element when choosing an SSL provider. SSLGenie Certificates are inherently trusted by 99.3% of the current Internet population, which is the maximum any CA is providing in the market. If you use an SSL Certificate that has been issued by a CA Root Certificate not present in the trusted Root Certificate store in one of the commercially available browsers then the visitor's browser will display a warning message. Clearly you need to avoid such warnings. Make sure that you avoid such warnings by selecting a cost effective SSL Provider with the highest browser acceptance level across all browsers.
